Tesamorelin: Visceral Fat and the Growth Hormone Axis
Medically reviewed by: Op. Dr. Ferhat İlen, ENT – Head & Neck Surgeon · Last updated:
Tesamorelin is a GHRH analogue that stimulates endogenous growth hormone release. In its approved indication, it has been demonstrated to significantly reduce visceral adipose tissue.
Regulatory / evidence status: FDA-approved (2010): Reduction of excess abdominal (visceral) fat in HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Other uses are off-label.
Monitoring
IGF-1 levels, blood glucose, and fluid retention are monitored. Contraindicated in active malignancy, pregnancy, and pituitary disorders.
Off-Label Use
Robust evidence for longevity applications is lacking; clinical decisions are made solely following an individualized physician evaluation.
Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as growth hormone?
No; tesamorelin stimulates the pituitary gland to increase the body's own growth hormone secretion.
